What it means to “be from the south,” according to Short-Term Stay

Vibra Mahou’s Madrid Stages series continues to present both established and new talents in all the city’s venues. To the SVSTO concert tonight, Friday, June 19, we must add the event in Vesta this Saturday, June 20. That will be when you can see Vasck’s indie rock concert with Estadía a Corto Termo.

Short Term Stay present the debut they released last year, ‘Ser del sur’, which they defined as “a manifesto of love, struggle and resilience”, marked by migration, identity and the search for their own sound. According to their Instagram, the album is about their “experiences as migrants and a large piece of our lives.”

From Venezuela and with influences from both Latin American rock (maybe He Killed a Motorized Policeman?) and Anglo-Saxon rock in the vein of The 1975 or RHCP, Estadía a Corto Plazo is the group formed by Andrés Alcalá, Diego Borges and Diego Finol that has been publishing EPs and singles for almost a decade. They worked remotely and lately they seem settled in our country.

Among dusty, borderline indie rock songs, ‘Ser del sur’ stands out for compositions like ‘La tempestad’, half-funk or danceable influences like ‘Placebo’ or ‘Versus’, somewhat summery mid-tempos like ‘Azar’ and catchy pop-rock songs like ‘El cielo no responder’.

Although they play a type of rock that can also remind us of Radiohead from ‘The Bends’, sometimes they stand out as in the interesting ‘Versus’. More in line with late 70s punk-funk or LCD Soundsystem, it may be the song that best exemplifies what “Being from the South” means, with phrases like “We are condemned to run” or “you imagined they weren’t going to come for you,” along with the sound of approaching police sirens.
