Why ‘Rosas’ by La Oreja has made it into Spotify’s global charts

A few days ago we reported on the return of ‘Rosas’, the 2003 hit by La Oreja de Van Gogh, to the official Spanish singles chart, in 70th place. This information is immediately after the recovery of ‘Rosas’ in one of the four massive concerts that Karol G has just offered in Spain, in which Amaia Montero has been present.

Weeks after that, ‘Rosas’ is achieving an unprecedented impact worldwide, in a mysterious way. ‘Rosas’ has entered this Saturday in the top 200 positions of the global Spotify chart, specifically in position 184, surrounded by old and ancient hits, by Dua Lipa or Tears for Fears. Today, Sunday, it climbs to 165, going up 19 positions. It has not been a mirage.

The “mystery” is that ‘Rosas’ has become popular again in literally half of Latin America, as shown by daily Spotify data, probably after its high-profile revival in the second of the four concerts that Karol G has just performed in Madrid.

What we find when breaking down this “global top 165” of ‘Rosas’ is that the great ballad by La Oreja de Van Gogh has positioned itself at number 28 on Spotify Mexico, number 32 in Peru, number 19 in Ecuador, number 54 in Spain, number 28 in Colombia, number 23 in Guatemala, number 48 in Chile, number 67 in Argentina, number 24 in Costa Rica, number 35 in Bolivia, number 29 in Venezuela, number 15 in Nicaragua, number 22 in El Salvador, number 52 in Paraguay, number 23 in Honduras, number 33 in Panama, number 78 in Uruguay and number 72 in the Dominican Republic. As I said: half of Latin America.

The re-popularization of ‘Rosas’ in Latin America does not come out of nowhere. Four times platinum in Spain, ‘Rosas’ is considered a pop classic also outside our borders, as it reached number 1 on the official charts of many of the countries mentioned, such as Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile or Peru, more than 20 years ago.

The current line-up of La Oreja de Van Gogh is currently on a festival tour that has just taken the band to Rio Babel, for example. Although not even the “nostalgia” factor of this tour would have made the public anticipate that La Oreja would achieve global success on Spotify in 2024.
