The ‘Glitter’ campaign is one of the most disastrous in memory in the pop industry. Mariah Carey was hospitalized that summer for mental health problems, the album – soundtrack to the film of the same name – was delayed and finally coincided with the 9/11 attacks. From a commercial point of view, it was a resounding failure and the criticism was not supportive either.
It was also the time when ‘Loverboy’ had to be changed at the last minute to coincide in sampling with ‘I’m Real’ by Jennifer Lopez, after a betrayal by Tomy Mottola. Mariah ended up changing Virgin for Universal, after what she considers one of the “most stressful” periods of her life.
However, over time, ‘Glitter’ has been vindicated for its post-disco sound and its strange homage to the 80s and is now going to be reissued. Mariah Carey has announced that the album will return to streaming platforms through her own label (she distributes “MARIAH”) and there will also be a vinyl edition.
Apple Music reveals that the release date is October 30, and also specifies the presence of a “disc 2”, which features 15 bonus tracks, along with Mariah’s original 12, still untitled. At the moment we only know that cut 4 is a remix of ‘Didn’t Mean to Turn You On’, by an artist as current as Rochelle Jordan.
Rochelle Jordan brings her taste for elegant 90’s house, in this case in its lounge version, to a song that sounded very funky in its original version. More like, close to Prince.
