‘Viscus’ is another wonder from Oklou, now with FKA twigs

Oklou and FKA twigs have joined forces on ‘Viscus’, the first preview of the reissue of ‘Choke Enough’, Oklou’s excellent debut album, released last February. An album that was presented live in Barcelona, in a Sala Apolo filled to the brim.

‘Viscus’ is another floaty piece from Oklou and one of his best singles. Oklou co-produces it with Danny L. Harle, although the vaporous, ethereal digital synth style of ‘Viscus’ bears the mark of Marylou Mayniel. FKA twigs appears at the end contributing one of her heartfelt melodies.

‘Viscus’ is a word referring to viscera, and the song is an exploration of the inner world of Oklou and FKA twigs. Oklou “loses herself” within herself and, as she moves towards maturity, she begins to not recognize the world around her. FKA twigs’ verse is pure ‘Eusexua’: “I avoid myself naked in the bathroom, just to touch my body in the dark.”

What content will the ‘Choke Enough’ reissue that comes out on October 31 bring? ‘Viscus’ is the only bonus track originating from the ‘Choke Enough’ sessions, Oklou confirmed to Pitchfork. The rest of the material consists of ‘What’s Good’ and ‘Dance 2’, two outtakes immediately prior to the recording of ‘Galore’ (2020), and a version of ‘The Fish Song’ by Underscores, which Oklou has played live during his last tour.

As for FKA twigs, she is also about to reissue her latest album: ‘EUSEXUA: Afterglow’ goes on sale on October 14.
