Underscores, the project of the American composer and producer April Harper Grey, who we recently told you about following her single ‘Music’, has released a new song these days and it is the most pop of her entire career.
‘Do It’ is a production inspired by the pop and futuristic R&B of the 2000s. Its mechanical rhythm, funky accent and fusion of acoustic guitars and bursts of noise are reminiscent of Britney Spears’ work with Bloodshy & Avant, Justin Timberlake’s ‘Futuresex/LoveSounds’ (2006), a bit of Basement Jaxx, and also Janet Jackson around the time of ‘Feedback’ (2008) and ‘Make Me’ (2009).
Underscores, who this year collaborated with Oklou on ‘Harvest Sky’, is a true student of pop; That’s why it’s not surprising that in ‘Do It’ she proclaims that the only thing she’s married to is music. He had already made it clear in his previous single.
But ‘Do It’ is also a declaration of intent. Underscores establishes clear boundaries with someone you are interested in, warning that there will be no relationship unless you know each other well. And that includes her musical career: “You don’t understand, people tattoo my lyrics on their skin,” challenges the artist. Then he adds: “Do you know how much I’m worth? Do you know my song? Do you have it on your playlist? Do you use Spotify?”
The composer makes it clear that love is not part of her plans for now: “For me, everything is at stake, and you could ruin everything.” With ‘Do It’, it is evident that Underscores is out to win.
