Rina Sawayama and Paris Hilton are set to release a joint single titled 'I'm Free', as part of Hilton's upcoming album 'Infinite Icon'. The single will be available next Friday, June 21. However, beyond the music, the most striking thing is the way in which they announced the collaboration.
Hilton has uploaded a “conversation” with Sawayama to Instagram in which she sends him the file for 'I'm Free' and the message: “Hey sister! I've been working on something…” So far everything is normal. Rina replies: «Paris! Obsessed.” While a sample of the song plays in the background, which seems totally inspired by Ultra Nate's 'Free', Paris suggests Rina get on the track: “What if… you did a verse?”
Sawayama accepts (“Running to the studio”) and Hilton responds, clearly excited: “In suspense.” “Three infinite hours” later, the 'Hold The Girl' singer sends the finished song to Paris. «It couldn't be more iconic. “We need to get it out this summer,” Hilton responds. They both agree on the date and she says goodbye with: “Yaaas, sliving.”
This commercial movement is already beginning to take its toll on Sawayama, with numerous comments recalling Paris Hilton's racist past. Especially in relation to what happened with Matt Healy last year at Glastonbury.
Sawayama called out The 1975 singer following comments he made about Ice Spice on a podcast, while presenting the song 'STFU': “This goes out to a white man who watches 'Ghetto Gaggers' (porn) and makes fun of of Asian people in a podcast. He also owns my masters. “I've had enough.” In fact, Healy has gotten into the discussion in the way he likes most, leaving the popcorn bucket emoji in the comments of the post.
