He Granada Young Directors Festival celebrates his 30th anniversary of the October 20 to 26 with a glazed program structured by cinema and inspired by the most daring audiovisuals.
The Young Directors Festival, one of the most emblematic film events in Andalusia, celebrates its thirtieth anniversary from October 20 to 26with a cultural proposal that goes beyond traditional cinema. This year, the festival opens the doors of the Isabel la Católica Theater to a wide range of artistic expressions, from cinema and short films, to live music, poetry recitals and podcasts, all under an experimental and multidisciplinary approach.
Shows that fuse poetry, music and audiovisuals
Among the most anticipated activities is the poetic show Someone assembled my parts, charged my battery and lefta performance by the Granada artist Mayte Gomez Molinarecent winner of the National Young Poetry Award. This recital goes beyond the written word, as it incorporates live music by Ylia and an audiovisual discourse developed by the artist. Mupi (Ricardo Márquez) with Gómez Molina herself. The show promises to be a sensory immersion that blurs the boundaries between poetry, sound and image, expanding the meaning and experience of poetic language.
Cinema, podcast and critical reflection through ‘Punzadas Sonoras’
The festival also gives space for critical reflection through the podcast Sound Stabswhich will offer a special edition in collaboration with the filmmaker Elena Lopez Riera. After the screening of his acclaimed film The brides of the southwhich debuted at festivals such as Cannes and San Sebastián, López Riera will talk with the presenters Ines Garcia and Paula Ducay. This program has stood out for its ability to reflect on complex topics in an accessible and entertaining way, taking the work of Roland Barthes as its axis to explore questions about cinema, art and philosophy through fiction and essays.
The premiere of the documentary ‘Generation Lagartija’
Another of the great moments of the festival will be the premiere in Granada of the documentary Lizard Generationdirected by César Martínez Herrada. The film introduces us to the world of the band Nick Lizardiconic for its surreal and innovative approach to music, especially with conceptual albums like ‘Omega’, in collaboration with Enrique Morente, or its admiration for the Granada filmmaker José Val del Omar. Through their tours and the influence of the Generation of ’27, the documentary captures the creative essence of the group, highlighting the connection between their musical work and influential figures such as Luis Buñuel and Federico García Lorca.
Silent cinema and technological avant-garde with Zahara and Martí Perarnau IV
In collaboration with the La Madraza University Cinema Club, the “Young centenarians” cycle recovers gems of silent cinema that are turning 100 years old. To close this cycle, the singer Zahara, together with the musician Martí Perarnau IV, will present DRAMA, an innovative session that will fuse techno and electronic music with live audiovisual projections. As a DJ, Zahara will explore the connections between music and avant-garde cinema, projecting fragments of ‘The Strike’ by Sergei Eisenstein and ‘Cine-eye’ by Dziga Vertov, to create a unique audiovisual proposal that challenges conventional perceptions about the Soviet avant-garde.
Official section and short film competitions
He Palace of the Counts of Gabia It will be the meeting point for creators, industry professionals and the public, in a space dedicated to reflection and the exchange of ideas. The official section of the festival is divided into three categories: the International Competition, which highlights the most innovative and experimental contemporary cinema without genre or duration restrictions; the Aguaespejo Competition, inspired by the work of the Granada filmmaker Jose Val del Omarwhere filmmakers are invited to reflect on the relationship between the moving image, water and the environment; and the Vibrations Competition, focused on the most original and risky Andalusian short film, which will receive awards thanks to the support of the SGAE Foundation.
Master classes and the finishing touch with ‘Volverás’
The master classes, taught by renowned figures such as Victor Ericedirector of close your eyes the producer Marta Velasco, the photographer Manuela Lorente and the filmmaker Jonás Trueba, will be a unique opportunity for the public and emerging creators to learn from the experience of these outstanding professionals.
To close the festival, ‘Volverás’, the latest film by Jonás Trueba, which won an award at the Cannes Festival, will be screened. This romantic comedy, starring Itsaso Arana and Vito Sanz, tells the story of a couple who decides to celebrate their separation, in a nod to classic cinema, with touches of humor and nostalgia.
A final party with the most surreal boyband
The festival will say goodbye in style on Saturday, October 26, with a concert by Mainline Magic Orchestra in the Aliatar room. This boy band, known for its surreal and unusual style, will lead a night of celebration that promises to be unforgettable, putting the finishing touch to 30 years of one of the longest-running and most innovative festivals in Andalusia.
