Teo Planell released his long-awaited folk EP, ‘Aún No Existía Beatrice’, on Friday, directly inspired by his new life in the mountains of Madrid and the silence that accompanies it. ‘Abraxas!’, the song that opens the project, is the Song of the Day.
Accompanied by the warm cello of Carlos Clerencia, the falsettos of Roy Borland and a melody that seems to be taken from the songbook of Sufjan Stevens or Simon & Garfunkel, Teo Planell is able to transmit the nostalgia of a lifetime at just 20 years old. It is thanks to phrases like this: «I will cross the field chasing a light that will give me back my beautiful youth».
JENESAISPOP had the pleasure of visiting her home-studio, named El Royale, where she lives with Borland and the artists Yero G and Azuleja. This bucolic place has been the seed of ‘Aún No Existía Beatrice’. Title, by the way, inspired by the novel ‘Demian’, by Hermann Hesse.
Speaking to Borland and Planell, they tell us that they always make sure that “everything we do is the inevitable fruit of the now.” Perhaps that is why ‘Abraxas!’ and ‘Canción en Murcia’ sound so organic and sincere. They cite Adrianne Lenker, The Smile and Cindy Lee among their favorite artists of the year, without ignoring the obvious harmonic influence of The Beatles and The Beach Boys.
Planell also announced the release of a debut album that bears little resemblance to what was offered on this EP. It will be more similar to their first singles, “with synthesizers and band sound.” So far we have only heard two songs, ‘Radio’ and ‘Me Vas A Matar’, but it has been enough for us to not wait any longer.
