‘The Life of a Showgirl’ is having an unprecedented commercial reception, having already sold more than 3 million copies in the United States alone, 300,000 in the United Kingdom, and all of this before the week has even ended. But it’s also getting patchy reviews, with some outlets rating the album 5 stars like Rolling Stone, and others suspending it, like The Guardian. The feeling in forums like Popjustice or our comments section is rather negative.
Taylor Swift has decided to answer these criticisms during an interview with Apple Music. In the video below these lines, which begins with some laughter about the mention of Real Madrid in the song ‘Wi$h Li$t’, he talks about this topic at minute 6.
The artist says when asked about people’s reaction, without the presenter especially appealing to negative criticism: “I welcome chaos. If it’s the first week of my album release and you’re saying my name or the album title, you’re contributing. And art… I have a lot of respect for subjective opinions about art. I’m not the art police. That is, everyone has the right to feel exactly what they want.
His most interesting statement comes next, when he says that albums that have not performed as well at first as ‘Reputation’, which has the same score as the new one on Metacritic (70/100), have later vindicated themselves.
“I love seeing my fans say, ‘I didn’t identify with ‘Reputation’ before, and now that certain things have happened to me in my life, it’s my favorite album.” Or “I used to be a ‘Fearless’ girl, and now I’m obsessed with ‘Evermore.’ I do things for the long term. I keep legacy in mind when I make my music. I know what I did. “I know I love it, and I know that as far as what ‘Showgirl’ is, this is all part of it.”
