Jeanette is news today for two reasons. First, she is the guest artist in the new single from Lucas Bun, ‘as a crystal’ (you will remember Lucas Bun for her participation in the latest edition of Benidorm Fest). Second, it is versioned – or adapted, rather – in one of the songs included in the new album by Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco, ‘Sad eyes’.
‘I Said I Loved Your First’, the collaborative album of Selena and Benny, is presented today with the focus track However, the melodic and romantic style of ‘Sad eyes’ stands out because the song is based on ‘The boy with sad eyes’, Jeanette’s success of 1981 composed of Manuel Alejandro.
‘Sad eyes’ updates the Jeanette classic using a retro and decadent keyboards and batteries that feel luxurious to Selena’s voice. She sings in English and yields the Spanish to María Zardoya, singer of The Marías, whose bell powerfully remembers that of Jeanette. The choruses of ‘sad eyes’ and ‘The boy with sad eyes’ are the same.
Selena and Benny have presented ‘I Said I Loved Your First’ with very different singles but that work together. ‘Sunset Blvd’ can be the best of all, a tribute to the eighties as John Mous has understood in his career, but adapted to the mainstream. ‘Scared of Loving You’ has been the Ballad Cuqui that works best in context. And ‘Call Me When You Break Up’ has been forced with Grace Adams, nice but nothing succulent.
The recovery of the single with J Balvin ‘i Can’t get into law’, released in 2019, 6 years ago; But the album contains other pleasant surprises, such as the eighties pop of ‘Don’t Wana Cry’, the colorful house of ‘Bluest Flame’ or the trip-hop of ‘You Said You Were Sorry’. One of Selena Gomez’s best albums, against all prognosis?
