‘Second Prize’ is closer to an Oscar nomination

‘Second Prize’, the film by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez inspired by the story of Los Planetas, has passed the preselection of the Spanish Film Academy to represent Spain at the Oscars in the category of Best International Film. It was competing with two other films, ‘Marco’ by Aitor Arregi and Jon Garaño, and ‘La estrella azul’ by Javier Macipe.

Actor Eduardo Noriega announced the news this morning at the Academy headquarters, together with the president of the institution, Fernando Méndez-Leite, and the notary Eva Fernández Medina.

Obviously, the Oscar nomination for ‘Second Prize’ is not yet guaranteed. The film will have to go through a first selection in mid-December, and the full Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17.

Lacuesta commented on the selection of ‘Second Prize’ with humour: “I only see weaknesses in the film, I am glad that there are people who have perceived it differently. I think that with English subtitles it will gain a lot,” he said.

The next Academy Awards ceremony will be held on March 2, 2025, in Spain, and in the early hours of March 3, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
