«Satanic and from Carabanchel»: Widow of punk and copla in her debut

Viuda is a quartet from Asturias formed by Elisa, Eva, Marta and Sara who are making a name for themselves by betting on a mix of “dark punk and copla”. Viuda’s darkness is – as their name probably indicates – gothic or even “satanic”. Humo internacional -their label- describes what happens in their live performances as a “ritual” of “black magic”, while their lyrics speak of “the condemnation and the darkness of destiny”. One of their songs is called ‘Satánica y de Carabanchel’.

Dark as the Night is the proposal of Viuda’s first EP, eponymous and published in 2021, which contains their most listened to song to date, ‘Ramera’, in which the group declares: «Ramera hasta la sepultura». In its visible fusion of punk and copla, exposed in a song that lasts just over a minute, ‘Ramera’ unites guitars and castanets.

After making a name for herself with other great tracks like ‘Intro’, ‘Alleraná’ or ‘Veneno’, Viuda will release her first full-length, ‘Provinciana’, on September 24th. ‘Provinciana’ is part of Humo’s new macro-release; the label will publish, between September and November, without a break, the new albums of 12 artists from its catalogue, among which are, in addition to Viuda, La Culpa, Somos la Herencia or Balcanes.

To inaugurate this ambitious project, Humo is releasing today, September 4, 12 previews of these 12 albums and bringing them together in a compilation that is not only available for streaming, but is also being released in a “luxury” vinyl format accompanied by a booklet. Humo’s aim with this release is to recover the spirit of independent labels and to assert itself from Asturias by operating outside the dictatorship of playlists and viral videos.

The introduction to Viuda’s album is ‘Quincallera’, today’s Song of the Day. A new punk shot that mixes guitars and a church organ-like keyboard, reminiscent of early gothic punk. In ‘Quincallera’, Viuda turns the phrase “My grandfather told me ‘don’t be a quincallera’ / my grandmother told me ‘don’t be a fawner'” into one of her clear battle cries. It’s our Song of the Day today.
