Santiago Segura qualifies his words about trans people

While ‘Torrente Presidente’ continues to sweep the box office and has already grossed 19 million euros, well above ‘Bitter Christmas’, Santiago Segura has clarified his controversial words about trans people spoken during a recent interview, in which he stated that “trans people in Spain have never had any problems.”

In a viral conversation with María Guerra on Spotify, Segura makes a series of simplistic, alarmist and fallacious observations about the trans law and the “only yes means yes” law, stating things that the trans law “allows any man with a beard to identify as a woman.” He also complains about being called a “facha” for defending positions contrary to the left.

During the same intervention, Segura suggests that VOX voters are a product of the left for “having cornered them” towards the far-right vote, and makes a strange comparison of problems by stating that she prefers that her tax money be allocated to breast cancer research instead of gender violence, because more women die in the first case.

Regarding trans people, Segura launches another strange simplification in the interview, stating that in Spain “they have never had any problems”, ignoring their historical and invisible social and labor marginalization. He gives as an example Bibiana Fernández as a trans woman who has been socially accepted in our country, ignoring her exceptionality as a well-known and famous person.

Segura has tried to clarify her words in a tweet, in which she acknowledges having been “hugely wrong”, shows her “unconditional support for trans people” and indicates that trans women “have been marginalized, mistreated and persecuted in Spain.”

However, the filmmaker explains that what he wanted to say is that “at the time the law was approved, trans women in Spain were already integrated into society and had the respect of the population”, unlike in countries “like Russia or where ayatollahs rule”, ignoring the degrees, nuances and contradictions that can occur in all cases.
