Rosalia, Alaska … among the best Latin pop artists for Billboard

Billboard has published another of his commented lists for the month of women, in this case focusing on Latin pop artists. We repeat: pop artists, understand artists who have transcended their respective musical genres and have become universal.

The Billboard list prioritizes the presence of artists who “have built a catalog that has resisted the test of time” and “whose music has inspired others and created lasting trends,” and has taken into account artists “who have unique and exceptional voices and that, in general, had a significant impact on Billboard lists.”

Shakira, the absolute queen of Latin pop, leads the list followed by Gloria Estefan in the 2 and Selena Quintanilla in 3. It is no surprise to see Karol G, the best composer of current reggaeton, at number 5, although it appears between Celia Cruz in 4 and Rocío Dúrcal in 6.

Dúrcal is the first Spanish who appears on the list but not the only one: Rosalía appears in 14, Marta Sánchez in 25, Ana Torroja in 26, Rosario Flores in 31, Isabel Pantoja in 33, Rocío Jurado in 38, Alaska in 39 and Natalia Jiménez in 33.

In the list, legends such as Mercedes Sosa, who greets in 10; Modern icons such as Julieta Venegas, which appears in 29, new stars like Kali Uchis, which appears in 35, and cult artists such as Javiera Mena, which closes the list in the 50th place.

Billboard classification covers Latin music that has “transcended borders”, such as Laura Pausini (9) or Anitta (45), but also created within US territory by artists with Latin roots, such as Christina Aguilera or Jennifer Lopez, which appear in positions 18 and 19, respectively.

The marked presence of Mexican artists such as Yuri (34), Thalia (15) or the newly deceased Paquita la del Barrio (22) remembers that this is an American list. And the “Pop” undergoing explains the absence in the Yma Sumac, Amália Rodrigues or Lola Flores list, although not that of mine and her great disciple, Mónica Naranjo, which, unlike Javiera Mena, is “part of the mainstream.” Although it must be emphasized that the list is noted to the impact of these artists in the United States.
