Pulp have kicked off their US tour in Chicago with a big surprise: a new song. It’s called ‘Spike Island’, sounds a lot like Bowie and is the group’s first new track in 11 years, following the release of ‘After You’ in 2013.
Even though their Primavera Sound show was one of the best of their careers, we always want more Pulp. And maybe we’ll get it. The legendary British band has performed a new song that could either remain a one-off release or could mean the existence of a longer work. This would be their first since ‘We Love Life’, in 2021.
“No pressure. What can I tell you? What should I say? You’ll have to decide for yourselves,” said the frontman before launching into the presentation of the song.
No new musical directions. ‘Spike Island’, probably in honour of the historic Stone Roses concert in 1990, sounds totally like the best of Pulp. Cocker gives a great vocal performance in a chorus that recalls Bowie’s ‘Heroes’ and that carries a promise in its lyrics: “This time I’ll get it right.”
