Phoenix has offered the closing musical performance of the Paris Olympics, almost as if it were a Super Bowl intermission, although less well organized. There were visible problems with sound and stage settings at the beginning of Phoenix’s performance, as the athletes were on stage with the band, causing chaos. At least they were consistent with the opening gala.
While the group performed their hits, such as ‘Lisztomania’ and ‘1901’, they welcomed one guest artist after another. The surprise was Ezra Koenig, singer of Vampire Weekend, who came on stage to sing their joint song, ‘Tonight’ with Phoenix. Air made a cameo to play ‘Playground Love’ and Kavinsky played ‘Nightcall’ while Belgian singer Angèle walked across the stage. Cambodian rapper Vannda was another of the guest artists.
Another of the stars of the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games may have been the “interstellar traveller” who starred in Thomas Jolly’s grand show, which featured dozens of dancers, giant reproductions of the Olympic rings and a pianist playing in the air. Someone wanted to see Daft Punk on stage.
A few hours earlier, Zaho de Sagazan, author of the great ‘Tristesse’, was in charge of opening the closing ceremony of the Games by offering a performance of ‘Sous le ciel de Paris’, the classic chanson from 1951.
The torch pass to Los Angeles featured musical performances by Red Hot Chili Peppers, who performed ‘Can’t Stop’; Billie Eilish, who performed ‘Birds of a Feather’ accompanied by Finneas and the rest of her band, and Snoop Dogg. The latter, after rapping ‘Drop it Like It’s Hot’, brought out Dr. Dre – who was not confirmed – on stage to perform ‘The Next Episode’. The three artists performed from Los Angeles, on Long Beach.
Prior to the broadcast from Los Angeles, from the Stade de France, HER, the Grammy favourite, sang the American national anthem, the Star-Spangled Banner, as always glued to her electric guitar, and Tom Cruise performed his leap into the void trick, before starring in the video in which he “travelled the world” to get to Los Angeles and plant the Olympic flag.
The closing ceremony of the Olympic Games was brought to a close by French singer Yseult, who appeared on stage to show off her voice and sing Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’. Yseult became famous this summer with ‘Alibi’, the hit by Sevdaliza, in which she is a guest artist, alongside Brazilian singer Pabllo Vittar. See you in Los Angeles.
