Perfume Genius covers Bronski Beat’s classic “Smalltown Boy”

Perfume Genius has collaborated with the American electronic duo The Knocks in a version of that timeless and vindictive classic that is “Smalltown Boy” by the British Bronski Beat.

Michael Hadreasbetter known artistically as Perfume Geniushas joined forces with electronic duo The Knocks to give a new, more danceable life to one of the great LGBTI pop anthems of all time. We are talking about the classic “Smalltown Boy” by the British Bronski Beat, a group led in the eighties by Jimmy Somervillewho would later create The Communards.

This collaboration has arisen to celebrate the forty years of the publication of “The Age Of Consent”which was the first album of Bronski Beatreleased in 1984. And about it, Somerville himself has said “it’s a nice echo of the past coming back after travelling a long and eventful distance.” For his part, Perfume Genius has said “When you try to sing such an iconic song, you want to be sure that what you do does justice to the song and that you can add your own part without screwing it up too much. It was pressure, but it was something I loved doing.”

The new fortieth anniversary edition of Bronski Beat’s album is available at this link.
