Oracle Sisters is a French trio that has already released an album titled ‘Hydranism’ and a couple of EPs titled in honor of Paris. Perhaps far from what you are imagining, in the past they have stuck to bossa nova (‘Ruby on the Sun’) and dreamlike chamber pop (‘Tramp Like You’). Followers of Foxygen and The Lemon Twigs can undoubtedly look out for the latter or their big hit ‘Asc. Scorpio’, included in ‘Paris I’.
The story of Oracle Sisters is curious: Lewis Lazar and Christopher Willatt, childhood friends, grew up in Brussels until their paths separated: one, a painter, went to New York and the other, a mathematician, to Edinburgh. Meeting in Paris, they met the Finnish Johansen, starting up as a band in 2017.
They are currently introducing us to a second album of which ‘Alouette’ is the first preview and our Song of the Day today. The theme is presented with a video directed by Jim Longden starring Charlie Rowe, and in which, in a sequence shot, he has time to talk on the phone, paint or play the guitar. Perhaps a parody of the group itself?
The video tries to portray the dizzying rhythm of the composition, and also a singing chorus, in which the pirates, the owls and the artists “sing equally.” More indie in style than their other songs, close to the more accessible Vampire Weekend or Phoenix, ‘Alouette’ could be a turning point for Oracle Sisters’ ambitions. They themselves define it as “taking a high-speed train in a landscape painted by Salvador Dalí.”
The group has announced a tour that will take them to venues including London’s Koko venue in April. They have been generous with our country, as they announce up to 4 dates here, partly sponsored by the Primavera Sound promoter.
