‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’, The Weeknd’s new album, has come leaving several surprises. First, the total absence of the single ‘Dancing in the Flames’, which Abel Tesfaye has preferred to leave out of the repertoire possibly because of his poor commercial performance. It has been a minifracaso for that success factory called Max Martin. Second, the album duration -22 cuts, 1 hour and 20 minutes- practically constitutes that of a double album.
That the duration of ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ is justified we will end up finding it with listening. In principle, very solid issues coexist with others that are less. For each ‘Open Hearts’ Grower, a blandegue theme appears as ‘Red Terror’.
The Weeknd is heard very comfortable in the style of Synth-Pop dark of his two previous works, ‘Dawn FM’ (2023) and ‘After Hours’ (2020), because we must not forget that ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’ It serves as a closure for trilogy. The Italo Disco is very present in these new productions, for example in ‘Without a Warning’, but Tesfaye does not finish carrying that sound and its formula beyond what is known, except in some subject told as ‘Opening Night’. It is even funny that it has taken so long to get a song called ‘Drive’.
Some cuts will be especially commented on by their collaborations. ‘Wake Me Up’ opens the album sounding to Justice because it is produced by Justice, Lana del Rey contributes some Tarareos in ‘The Abyss’ and adds a fourth collaboration with the Canadian, and Florence + The Machine choirs are easily audible in’ Reflections Laughing ‘, which also has the participation of Travis Scott. Giorgio Moroder himself is invited in ‘Big Sleep’ maybe because the album sounds a lot to the future album he popularized.
‘Reflections Laughing’ is one of the few more or less experimental themes of ‘Hurry Up Tomorrow’. In contrast, ‘Open Hearts’ is one of the Bangers, and therefore our song of the day. Therefore, Tesfaye has not hesitated to present it live tonight in the Jimmy Kimmel program.
It remains to be seen ‘Open Hearts’ manages to knead the barbarity of streamings achieved by another of the singles included in this album, ‘Timeles’. What he does ‘Open Hearts’ is to take the formula of ‘Dancing in the Flames’ and improve it. Your tortured letter (“It is never easy to fall in love again, but you cover my wounds”) not the most original that Tesfaye can sign in 2025. But does anyone dare to doubt this good production Synthwave and this wonderful melody ?
