Olly Alexander, known for having been the singer of the band Years & Years, has experienced one of the most important moments of his career this year when he took the Eurovision stage to represent his country, the United Kingdom. Although in the end he came in a discreet 18th place, Alexander will always be able to boast of having presented a very colorful song, ‘Dizzy’.
In an interview that Alexander gave prior to his time at Eurovision, the singer announced that ‘Dizzy’ was part of a new album that he was preparing with Danny L. Harle, one of the most representative names of hyperpop. These days it has been announced that this album, ‘Polari’, will go on sale on February 7.
‘Polari’ is a work in which Alexander looks back at the times when queer love was a “forbidden love.” In it, Alexander has “imagined a freer world, one where I could be inspired by Odysseus, my boyfriend, Kylie and Derek Jarman.”
Specifically, ‘Dizzy’ will be track 6 of an album that will include 13 new compositions, including the new single, ‘Cupid’s Bow’. It is a co-production by Danny L. Harle and Finn Keane that points to synth-pop and the hardest Eurodisco of the 80s. Although it could be harder.
‘Cupid’s Bow’ points to the dance floor of New Order and the Eurodisco of the eighties, in accordance with lyrics that speak of two lovers who “don’t know what they want” but who still give themselves over to passion and desire . ‘Cupid’s Bow’ represents an evolution in Alexander’s sound, although as a song it never really grows. The attempt is appreciated.
