Sleight Bells patented a very peculiar sound back in 2010 that merged metal guitars with hip-hop beats and bubblegum-pop and pop Alexis Krauss’s duo and Derek Miller was one of the revelations of that year thanks to his debut, ‘Treats’.
In the last decade, Sleight Bells have continued to explore (or exploit) their sound on albums such as ‘Jessica Rabbit’ (2016) or the last one, ‘Texis’, (2021) but, above all, a strangely relevant name has become given the influence of their particular mix of styles, very present on the internet of today. Or in commercial pop, right, Demi Lovato?
In this scenario, Sleight Bells return with a new album called ‘Bunky Birthday Boy’ that is put on sale on April 4. The first advance, ‘Bunky Pop’, shows that, in what they do, Sleight Bells are still the best.
Especially Derek Miller shows off the controls of production in this explosive reclosive Bubblegum-Punk-pop recording that K-Pop producers are already studying with a magnifying glass. The mixture of guitar and video game synthesizers is very achieved.
But Sleight Bells also give a very clear and crystalline single at the composition level, so fun that it could serve as a tune of an anime. The melody is a sugar chute, and the chorus “Bunky Becky Birthday girl / Hell no, Hello, Hell no, Hello” is a shot.
Alexis Krauss, in addition, is still giving the role of an institute cheerleader, even when the letter of ‘Bunky Pop’ does not seem to make any sense. The way in which the microphone is snack is enough to become the soul of the song.
