In response to one of the questions that their fans send to their website The Red Hand Files, Nick Cave has assured that “it is neither left or right,” he says that he no longer recognizes the world, and affirming that he has known good people at both ends of the political spectrum.
His letter says: «Dear Alistair (…) I am not quite sure of my position on anything lately. As the land wobbles and slides under our feet, and the world hardens around its particular points of view, I feel more and more insecure and less safe than myself. I am neither left or right; I find both sides, as mainly presented, indefensible and unrecognizable ».
Nick Cave is defined as “a spiritual conservative of liberal tendency with” C “lowercase,” which does not consider anything political, but “a matter of temperament.”
Speaking about issues of the world, he affirms: «I have a devout nature and I see the world broken but beautiful, and I think it is our urgent and moral duty to repair it where we can and not cause more damage, or worse, deliberately cause its destruction (…) I think we have the obligation to help those who feel really marginalized, oppressed or afflicted in a useful and constructive way, and not to exploit their suffering for our own professional progress or survival staff”.
On some contemporary problems, he claims the right to silence: «I deeply disturbs the selfish and childish policy of some of my colleagues. I do not believe that silence is violence, complicity or lack of courage, but that silence is usually the preferred option when you do not know what you are talking about, it has doubts or is in conflict, which, in my case, occurs most of the time. I feel comfortable with ignorance and I consider that this is a spiritual and creatively dynamic posture. I think there are times when the mouth is silenced is almost a sacred duty.
He continues: «I am not especially concerned with people’s position; I have met some of the best people around the political spectrum. In fact, it is proud and gives me immense pleasure to have friends with divergent opinions. My life is much more interesting and vibrant with them ».
Finally, about the obligation of the musicians to comment, he concludes: «I consider my role as a musician, composer and writer of letters as an active service to the soul of the world, and I have come to understand that this is the position that I must adopt to try to cultivate a genuine change. In fact, now I begin to understand my position, Alistair: I am with the world, in its goodness and beauty. In these hysterical, monochromatic and convulsive times, I invoke their soul, as musicians, their afflicted and broken nature, to their wrong meaning, to their fragile and hesitant spirit. I sing, I praise it, I encourage it and effort to improve it: in worship, reconciliation and full faith ».
