Olivia Rodrigo has released the second official single from her new album, ‘you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love’. The song is titled ‘the cure’ and we all thought the same thing when reading it: there are already too many references to Robert Smith’s band.
The ‘GUTS’ author is known to be a big fan of The Cure, referring to Smith as her “personal hero” and even singing with him on stage at Glastonbury last year. Together they performed ‘Friday I’m In Love’ and ‘Just Like Heaven’. In turn, it is precisely this song that the artist mentioned in ‘drop dead’, the first single from her album.
However, ‘the cure’ is not so much inspired by The Cure at first glance, but by the more emo indie folk sound of the 2000s, but taken to the emotional terrain of Olivia, who uses medical metaphors of “antidotes”, “toxins” or “poison” to tell a story of emotional instability. The lyrics include the expression “I’m unraveled”, which is the title of Olivia’s tour, which passes through Spain next year.
Over five exciting minutes, Olivia delivers an unexpected, almost anti-commercial slow burner that, with just guitar and voice, patiently builds tension until the song explodes into an ending with drums and orchestra. Olivia describes ‘the cure’ as not only one of the best songs she’s ever written, but also her favorite on the album. Without a doubt, it is one of his best compositions.
Although this is the second single from the project, Rodrigo also unveiled the song ‘begged’ on SNL, with backing vocals from Weyes Blood included. Olivia Rodrigo’s new album will be available on June 12 on all platforms.
