Music for plants: Ozoyo’s peculiar electronics

In 1978 Canadian musician Mort Garson released the album ‘Mother Earth’s Plantasia’, an ambient music record designed “for plants to listen to.” At JENESAISPOP, Natalia Ferviú recommended it at the time. The album went unnoticed at its time but, in recent years, it has gained cult status and has become a collector’s item for many music lovers who decorate their homes with plants. That is to say, he is an icon of posturing. Surely you have seen it in some Instagram decoration videos and, if not, you will see it sooner or later.

The natural world has inspired great musical works throughout history, some as controversial as Stevie Wonder’s “The Secret Life of Plants,” and Ozoyo is one of the latest artists to draw on it to create their own music.

Ozoyo is the alias of a musician and producer based in Istanbul who makes naturalistic electronic music. His music is inspired by the “rich textures of nature” and his compositions receive titles such as ‘Dragonfly’ or ‘Distant Solace’.

Ozoyo’s early productions, such as those contained on his album ‘Motel Lazy’ (2019), were aligned with chill beats and lo-fi, and you would never guess that Ozoyo counts jazz legends like Chet Baker among his early influences. However, their current sound is very different, since Aphex Twin seems to be their main reference, in its most rhythmic and abstract aspect. Although Ozoyo’s music is more directly inspired by the organic sounds of nature, so much so that his next album, ‘Worm’, is entirely dedicated to the world of worms and larvae.

Based on titles like ‘Slow Worm’ or ‘Hornworm Metamorphosis’, among which ‘Worms on Acid’ necessarily stands out, Ozoyo delivers a series of interesting electronic designs that are torn between ambient and pure abstract rhythm. ‘Bearded Fireworm’, one of the singles from this ‘Worm’ which is released on October 25, is the Song Of The Day.

‘Bearded Fireworm’ is one of those electronic compositions that knows how to attract attention from the second zero and that you can’t help but put on loop. At first its resemblance to Aphex Twin’s style becomes evident but, later, the song begins to differentiate itself due to its naturalistic component full of liquid and viscous textures. ‘Bearded Fireworm’ is a feast of ear-tickling rhythms, melodies and effects. In the 90s he would have made the honeys of Björk and the Warp label. In 2024, they would surely do them too.
