Ms. Lauryn Hill has cancelled her tour dates with the Fugees in the United States and Canada just days before they begin. In a statement, Hill acknowledges that the cancellation of the tour is due to poor ticket sales, but blames the media for this circumstance and, specifically, accuses them of having “created a negative narrative” about her that has affected the public’s willingness to attend her concerts and therefore ticket sales.
Hill writes that after suffering an injury last year that required relocating a number of shows, “some media outlets inclined to sensationalism and clickbait have created a narrative that has affected ticket sales for the North American leg of the tour.” Hill laments that “this unfortunate portrayal of me has overshadowed the trust and faith I put into my intentions and commitment to my art.”
Whether it’s the media’s fault or not, the fact is that Ms. Lauryn Hill has had numerous cancellations over the past decade. Her (bad) reputation as a live artist has been affected by Hill’s habit of coming on stage late.
Ms. Lauryn Hill and the Fugees’ tour, which included a revival of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, was set to kick off in North America on August 9 and conclude on September 21 before heading to the UK and Europe. The UK and European dates remain on track.
This year, Apple Music has published its list of the best albums of all time, with ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ taking first place.
