Morrissey sends a letter to the Pope to stop bullfighting

In the midst of discussion about the cause of The Smiths Don’t meet again like this Oasis, Morrissey demands the Pope to stop bullfighting as part of a PETA campaign.

Taking on bullfighting is something Morrissey has been doing for many years and has been covered by all the media on the planet at some point. But now the Manchester singer has gone further by writing a handwritten letter to Pope Francis. In it he says that “these are devilish spectacles that betray the values of the Catholic Church.” Therefore, the current Church should face up to the problem and stop them.

Morrissey also adds that they are “an orgy of rape and violence fuelled by the drink that accompanies the running of the bulls”, although in this case it seems that he is referring more to popular festivals such as San Fermin. All of this would go against the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of animals and whom Pope Francis has set as an example in his pontificate.

The letter is part of a campaign by the animal rights group PETA. The letter concludes by saying: “Ninety-three percent of young Spaniards under the age of twenty-four reject bullfighting at all (…) As I once sang, we all want the bull to survive. So please show mercy and kindness to these animals and condemn bullfighting.”
