What’s going on with The Smiths? Apparently nothing good. According to Morrissey’s website, Johnny Marr has taken full control of The Smiths, owning all “trademark and intellectual property rights.” If true, Marr could do whatever he wanted with the band. Even change the vocalist.
Just a few days ago, the controversial frontman said on his website that the guitarist had “blocked” a Greatest Hits album. In addition, shortly before that, Morrissey had received an offer to carry out a reunion of The Smiths, in the style of Oasis. According to him, Marr did not let it go ahead. These two figures of British music have been resentful for years, but in recent weeks there has been too much movement.
In this way, Morrissey claims that Marr’s actions have been carried out without any kind of “consultation” and without giving him “the opportunity to object”: “Among many things, this means that Marr can now go on tour under the name The Smiths using the vocalist of his choice, and also prohibits Morrissey from using the name, as well as denying him considerable financial support,” can be read in the post.
The message ends with a reminder that “Morrissey alone” created the name The Smiths in May 1982. So, if everything the vocalist says is true, Johnny Marr could go on tour with a new singer for The Smiths without having to consult Morrissey.
