Recently, MIA has been in the news for her harsh words against Rosalía, whom she criticized for “appropriating” the religious aesthetics associated with Catholicism, highlighting that the Catalan uses religion as a disguise, while she, the rapper, has been disowned for converting to Christianity.
Very shortly after these statements, MIA reveals the arrival of her seventh album, which will be based “on prayer, the book of revelations and the Ark of the Covenant”, and will feature none other than the Sunday Service Gospel Choir, the same one that recorded several Christian albums with Kanye West a few years ago. His departure is imminent: April 17.
Curiously, ‘MI7’ is an album made up of seven songs divided into 16 tracks, according to Pitchfork, which also confirms the second reading of the album’s title: beyond indicating its position in MIA’s discography, it refers to MI7, a “discontinued branch of British military propaganda.”
The first teaser, ‘Everything’, is the penultimate cut and precedes the final track, which promises “30 minutes of silence.” For now, ‘Everything’ offers 3 minutes and 23 seconds of spiritual trip-hop, which takes refuge in God – and gospel – to combat the “devil.” “I will not live in sadness, I will not ask for money, I will be blessed in all my tomorrow,” sings the artist, in her most prophetic facet. “Without tears to shed, without fears to make me regret, joy will rain in my kingdom and in my neighborhood.”
