The Mercury Prize has revealed the artists and albums nominated for its next edition, which is expected to take place in September. Charli XCX’s ‘Brat’ is among the albums named, as well as Beth Gibbons’ ‘Lives Outgrown’ and The Last Dinner Party’s ‘Prelude to Ecstasy’, three of the best albums of 2024 (so far).
As you may recall, Beth Gibbons has already won a Mercury for Portishead’s masterpiece Dummy (1994). This time, she could win one for her solo work.
Among the nominees is Corinne Bailey Rae, once a best-selling artist with her 2006 debut. ‘Black Rainbows’ is her most political album.
Also nominated is the brilliant CMAT with her album ‘Crazymad, For Me’, and recent revelations such as Nia Archives, with ‘Silence is Loud’, or Barry Can’t Swim, with ‘When Will We Land’, will also compete in the awards ceremony.
Cat Burns with ‘Early Twenties’, Corto Alto with ‘Bad with Names’, English Teacher with ‘This Could Be Texas’, Berwyn with ‘Who Am I’ and Ghetts with ‘On Purpose, with Purpose’ complete the list of nominees.
In 2023, the Mercury winner was the group Ezra Collective, who managed to beat out Arctic Monkeys, Jessie Ware or Shygirl.
