Massive Attack has communicated its intention to withdraw its Spotify musical catalog in protest of the military investments of its co-founder and executive director, Daniel EK. Massive Attack explains that he has requested his seal, universal, the withdrawal of all his Spotify music because “money earned with efforts for fans and the creative work of musicians ends up financing lethal and dystopian technologies.”
Massive Attack is not the first artist who has recently announced his decision to leave in Spotify, but his example can be a turning point, since Bristol’s group is signed in a multinational: his listeners on the Swedish platform amounts to almost 8 million. In comparison, independent groups such as Xiu Xiu or Deerhof add several tens of thousands.
Massive Attack’s statement is part of his support for the non -genocide initiative, which calls artists to retire or geoblocate their music on all streaming platforms within the territory of Israel. Figures such as Rina Sawayama, Fontaines DC, Arca, Primal Scream, Oklou and Japanese Breakfast have also joined this campaign.
The text follows: “In our opinion, the historical precedent of the effective action of artists during apartheid in South Africa, and apartheid, war crimes and the genocide that now commits the state of Israel, make the campaign” no music for genocide “be imperative.”
“In the separate case of Spotify, the economic burden that artists have now imposed itself aggravated by a moral and ethical burden,” says the duo formed by 3D and Daddy G.
