Mariah Carey has brought up the song again from her lost alternative rock and grunge album, recorded in 1995, and says she still wants to release it. Furthermore, he has declared that ‘Butterfly’ is “probably” his “best album.”
‘Someone’s Ugly Daughter’, described as “carefree grunge” and “light punk” by the artist herself, was secretly recorded during the ‘Daydream’ sessions. Carey revealed the existence of this album in 2020, but no song has seen the light of day yet. Now, in a new episode of the ‘Las Culturistas’ podcast, Carey has declared that she still wants us to listen to it: “I’m upset that I haven’t released it yet.”
One of the presenters suggests that the singer release it independently on Garageband, and she immediately responds that she “could do it”: “It’s a good album,” she adds. Then, Carey makes a promise that we don’t know if it will ever be fulfilled: “Okay, you’ll listen to it,” he concludes.
At another point in the program, the New York singer says that ‘Butterfly’ (1997) is the album that means the most to her and admits that it is her best work, which is not very common among artists. They always tend to go for the last one or the first ones, but she is wiser: «I love that album. It has a concrete feeling when you listen to it. It just has a lot of diversity,” Carey declares before joking about the album’s lack of praise and awards. Curiously, Carey already indicated that he considered ‘Butterfly’ his masterpiece… in the booklet of a later album, ‘Memoirs of an imperfect angel’ (2009).
In the REVELACIÓN O TIMO podcast, when we stopped to select 6 essential Mariah Carey albums, it was clear to us that ‘Butterfly’ was the best. After collaborations with rappers that had begun in the ‘Daydream’ era, ‘Butterfly’ contained hits like ‘Honey’ and the pseudo bolero ‘My All’, as well as ‘The Roof’, a song that sampled Mobb Deep; ‘Babydoll’ with Missy Elliott; ‘Fly Away’ with David Morales and Elton John credits; or a Prince version. It is a perfect summary of what Mariah Carey’s legacy has been.
