Manuel Liñán, the Bailaor and Choreographer Granadino, known for developing a career in the avant -garde of Flamenco, is news for having been the subject of a series of violent homophobic attacks on social networks, following a video in which he appears acting with tail and shawl.
“Vicious, sick, degenerate” or “Horror see this Maromo of that guise” are some of the messages addressed to Liñán that could be read in the comments section of the Deflanco.com page on Facebook between Saturday and Sunday last. There were more than 500 comments, most of them homophobic attacks, which the journalist Mercedes L. Caballero compiled to expose what happened in an article in El País, before the publication of Deflanco.com was eliminated due to the violence of the comments.
In the video that originated such reactions, Liñán danced with tail gown in the theaters of the Madrid Canal, within the II Guitar Festival.
Following the article in El País, Liñán has publicly denounced the attacks through his Instagram profile, stating that, although in general he has felt very loved by critics, the public and the flamenco fans, he believes he convenient to expose to his audience this “unfortunate social reflection that we live today, perhaps by a minority loaded with hate and homophobia”. In addition, he points out that it is not the first time he receives attacks of this type in social networks.
“With deep sadness, I see myself in need of publicly denouncing the homophobic attacks that I have received after the publication of a video in which I appear dancing with tail and shaft robe,” he says in his Instagram publication. “The video, recorded on the 27th in the theaters of the Madrid Canal, was part of an artistic collaboration with my dear Manuel Valencia. The recording was published on Facebook by Deflanco.com, but it had to be withdrawn due to the violence and hatred that unleashed in the comments. Unfortunately, it is not the first time that I face this type of attacks in social networks. The press and the vast majority of the flamenco fans, I have believed convenient to show this unfortunate social reflection that we live today;
