A year ago, Manolo Martínez collaborated on the podcast REVELACIÓN or TIMO, leaving the door open to Astrud’s return: “Maybe there will be an Astrud album next year, maybe never.” With no release in sight, Martínez has given an extensive interview to El Correo in which he reviews his entire career and shares all kinds of thoughts about his lyrics, songs and the future of Astrud.
“I give my classes, I write articles and I try to publish them. That’s my day-to-day,” says Manolo Martínez at the beginning of the interview, now a doctor in Philosophy and a teacher at the University of Barcelona. Thirteen years after the “end” of Astrud, Martínez has shared his impressions of his work in the band, from how “proud” he feels of ‘Mi fracaso personal’ or the semi-commercial drift of ‘Gran fuerza’.
‘Cambio de idea’, ‘Minusvalía’ and ‘Hay un hombre en España’ are some of his favourite songs by the group, while others such as ‘Riqueza mental’, which “isn’t very funny”, or ‘Acordarnos’, which “isn’t right either”, are the ones that cause him the most doubts.
Martínez says that if Astrud were to tour today it would be with a “more ‘remember’ vibe, like Los Pecos coming back”: “I would feel sorry, lazy and I don’t know if it’s necessary or if it would be cool,” he says. Even so, he doesn’t rule out a reunion of the band.
Asked if there is any chance of releasing music as Astrud again, Martínez is clear: “I always answer the same, which is yes, but I think only if there are new songs,” she says. However, she also clarifies that it is most likely not going to happen: “The experience of the last fourteen years makes me suspect that I am not going to do it, but if it were to happen, if I suddenly found the time in my life to make those songs, and they seemed cool to me, then yes, I think we would make that EP and a small tour and I would have a good time.”
