Maná on Nicky Jam: “We don’t work with racists”

Latino support for Donald Trump is growing within Puerto Rico’s music community. After Anuel AA and Justin Quiles appeared at a Trump rally to support the former president, Nicky Jam is now the Latin star who has taken the step of publicly backing Trump by appearing alongside him at another of his massive rallies. In response, Maná has decided to remove his 2016 song with Nicky Jam, ‘De pies a cabeza’, from streaming platforms, declaring: “We don’t work with racists.”

Nicky Jam, who is actually a native of the United States, specifically Massachusetts, although his mother is Dominican and his father Puerto Rican, and who moved to Puerto Rico at the age of 10, is one of the great pioneers of reggaeton. So much so that in the late nineties he formed the group Los Cangris with none other than Daddy Yankee.

His name – like those of the aforementioned artists – is well known on the Spanish charts, not only since the 2018 hit of ‘X’, his single with J Balvin, number 1 in Spain, but also before with his famous collaborations with Enrique Iglesias on ‘El perdón’, Shakira on ‘Perro fiel’ or with his appearance on the remix of ‘Te boté’; and also afterwards – although to a lesser extent – with ‘Calor’. Lately, Nicky Jam has released the album ‘Insomnio’, although for the moment he has not presented it on El Hormiguero, like the previous one.

The fact is that Nicky Jam supports Trump and has appeared alongside the Republican candidate at a rally held this Saturday in Las Vegas. The news that has come from the meeting between Trump and Nicky Jam is that Trump has referred to Jam as a woman when introducing him on stage, giving the impression that he does not know who he is. In addition, Trump has made his slip by expressing one of his phrases: “Do you know Nicky? She is hot. Where is Nicky?” When Jam goes up on stage, Trump tries to hide his confusion: “I’m glad he went up.” Jam has laughed about the matter on Instagram calling himself a “bichota.” We do not know what Karol G, Anuel AA’s ex, will think of all this.

On stage, Nicky Jam supported Trump by appealing to his status as an immigrant. In words collected by Billboard, he declared: “It is an honor to meet you, Mr. President. The people who come from where I come from, they don’t know the president. So I’m lucky. We need him back. We need him to be the president.”
