Mac Demarco returns to his origins in his new album, but staying alone with percussion, bass and guitar. In ‘Guitar’, the Canadian singer -songwriter consciously resorts to the simplicity of demos to build a warm and comforting project. In this sense, ‘Shining’ is one of the best examples. It is the song of the day.
Before ‘Guitar’, Demarco says he had prepared another 14 songs that was finally eliminated for being “overproduced.” He himself says he suffered from “demoitis.” In fact, at Interview Magazine, he talked about ‘Shining’ had a keyboard. The absence of the instrument is clear in the chorus, which is as naked as peaceful and that speaks of verifying “if the sun continues to shine on it.”
The rest of the song is characterized by the artist’s occasional falsetto, who sings about a love that weakens: “My love must be broken / What has happened?” By minimalist and calm that results in the composition of ‘shining’, its melody remains one of the most effective that Demarco has composed in its last works.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jr_arqthflo
