Smerz, the original Norwegian duo formed by Catharina Stoltenberg and Henriette Motzfeldt, publishes new album on May 23, ‘Big City Life’. The successor of ‘Believer’ (2021) has been waiting for four years. In the middle, Smerz published an EP inspired by the Pop of 2000, ‘Allina’, and a choral work with the vocal set Gaea, ‘Tidigere Den Dagen’, both in 2024.
The first advance of ‘Big City Life’ has been ‘to Thousand Lies’, but the true commitment to the promotion of the album is ‘You Got Time and I Got Money’, the song of the day for today Sunday.
‘You Got Time and I Got Money’ is something like the ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ by Smerz, an inevitable comparison listening to the arrangement of strings of the song. Although the composition of ‘You Got Time and I Got Money’ drinks more of the romantic song of the 70s than of the Britpop, it is undeniable that the melody of strings turns the song into a jewel.
‘You Got Time and I Got Money’ exposes another type of romanticism based on a convergence between money, love and desire, it is not known whether in this order or in the inverse. The point of view is masculine (“I am yours, I am your boy”) but not cloudy, but in love and devout: “I want to see you naked, although I like how you dress,” “When I am with you I feel patient, I want to take you on vacation” or “I like how you move, when I wake up by your side” are some of the phrases expressed by the narrator. There is currency here, but also feeling.
