Lil Wayne, hurt by not being chosen for the Super Bowl

Kendrick Lamar will be performing at the halftime of this year’s Super Bowl, which is being held in New Orleans, the city where Lil Wayne, one of the most respected figures in the genre, was born. After Nicki Minaj’s string of tweets, Wayne uploaded a video today to his social networks in which he says that he was “really hurt” not to receive any calls.

In the solemn video, Wayne thanks all the “voices” who have shared their opinion and, after a pause, admits that he was not happy with the choice of Kendrick Lamar: “It hurt, it hurt a lot.” The latter also says that it “broke” him: “I’m trying to get myself together.” Last December, he promised that if he got the job he would not take anyone with him, not even a “great New Orleans jazz”: “I earned it.”

Since Lamar’s announcement, multiple rappers have shared their preference for Lil Wayne. Most notably, Nicki Minaj: “You have denied a young black man everything he has put into the game for no reason other than your ego,” she tweeted, addressing Jay-Z, owner of Roc Nation, a company with which the NFL has been collaborating since 2019. “Did your hate for Birdman, Drake, and Nicki cause you to punish Lil Wayne?” she wrote in one of the messages.
