Leire Martínez has revealed a sexist situation that she experienced while she was the vocalist of La Oreja de Van Gogh and against which none of her colleagues “did anything” at the time. She did so as part of a talk on “women who transform the industry” at BIME, in Bilbao. This has been reported by the EFE agency.
The ‘Mi Nombre’ singer begins by explaining the role she had in the band when she was still part of it: “I believed in the romantic idea that the important thing was the brand and not so much the proper names,” she began. She claims to have become “a stranger to many”: “I realized in the end that, in a veiled, perhaps unintentional way, my opinion was never heard as much.”
During the talk, the role that men play in creating community among women working in the music industry was highlighted. This led Leire to recount an unpleasant episode: “We were celebrating a number 1 and the president of the company told me: ‘Mmm, what tits you have!'”. Martínez says that, when he reported what happened to his colleagues, “none of them did anything.”
Leire also spoke about his role in the group in his interview with JENESAISPOP, in which he declared that in the band “we were five people who decided if it was A or B”: “I have been free to compose and propose within La Oreja, but being part of a group also implies that, that it is not you one hundred percent who decides or does it,” he told us.
