‘Le Risque’ is King Gizzard’s most fun and accessible track

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard keep taking risks, and coming out on top. In ‘Flight b741’, their first (and we’ll see if it’s only) album of 2024, the Australians delve into classic rock while creating one of their most feel-good projects. ‘Le Risque’ is one of their most addictive songs. It’s the Song of the Day.

‘Le Risque’ is unique in King Gizzard’s entire repertoire, which is no small feat. The reason is simple: it’s the only song in which all the members sing. Speaking of risks… In particular, the surprise has come from the group’s drummer, Michael Cavanagh, who has his spotlight on him halfway through the song. It’s more of a spoken lyric, but it works. In the comments of the video clip you can read that “they are now officially a boy band.”

A rhythmic bass introduces us to one of the most infectious melodies the group has ever created, between constant riffs taken directly from old school rock. It makes you want to take it to karaoke from the first minute. However, what shines most in ‘Le Risque’ is the humor.

The lyrics are so over-the-top (“I’m the fucking recoil of a gun in hell”), and self-deprecating at times (“Risk, sits, on the tip of my little dick”), that it’s impossible to keep from smiling throughout the entire 3-and-a-half-minute song. The music video perfectly accompanies the song’s playful sentiment, with the band basically passing the mic around and screwing around at a small airfield.
