‘La Tirana’ is the bowling alley of Mon Laferte and Nathy Peluso

In 1967 the Cuban singer lupe sang ‘La Tirana’, a passionate bolero on the manipulation of a man, today identifiable as a hymn about “gaslighting”, although then this word was not as widely used as now.

Rhymes like “for me it is indifferent / what you continue to comment / if the same people say / that the day I left you / it was I who won” described the freedom of a woman who had lived “the worst of the calvaries” but that was guilty. Now, Mon Laferte and Nathy Peluso pay tribute to ‘La Tirana’ in their new duet.

‘La Tirana’ by Mon Laferte and Nathy Peluso is not a version, but an original song that recreates the sound of a dramatic Latin bolero of the lupe piece, written tailored to two vocalists and performers who know how to print to melody the passion and strength it requires. Melody and instrumentation sound reverent, without greater intention than reproducing the power of classic boleros.

Mon and Nathy -which sign their first collaboration- They comfort each other in this romantic tragedy about two “condemned” women to loneliness due to the fear they raise in certain men. It is the classical history of macho love, answered from the feminine point of view. If Mon regrets that “that man does not understand, that there is also fragility in me,” Nathy agrees, he adds that “there is no man who dares” and both cry for his “love problems”, although they relativizes: “of worse problems we have left.” The drama of the song is so deliberately excessive that the almodovarian touches.

In ‘La Tirana’, Mon and Nathy express their heartbreak to the four winds, but they also release a message of sorority (“this does not go from competition”), they raise their requirements (“I want someone safe and experienced”) and validate the feelings of the other (“you deserve a real love”). The result is a timeless bolero, for the luck and misfortune of its authors.

The video clip of ‘La Tirana’ fuses elements of ‘Cabaret’, ‘The gentlemen prefer them blondes’ and the world of Vaudeville, according to Sony Music. ‘La Tirana’ will be part of the next album of Laferte, ‘Femme Fatale’, which is expected to be put on sale at the end of the year.
