Katy Perry on working with Dr. Luke: “It comes out of me”

With Katy Perry’s new album, ‘143’, due out September 20, just weeks away, the ‘Roar’ hitmaker has visited Alex Jones’ podcast, Call Her Daddy, to give one of the “few” interviews she’ll be giving in this new era. Perry says she chose Jones’ podcast because she finds her to be “authentic” and that her questions are to the point.

And Alex Jones gets straight to the point by asking Katy -at the end of the interview- the million-dollar question: why has she decided to work with Dr. Luke again on ‘143’ and what does she think about the criticism she has received regarding this choice.

Perry answers the first question, but not the second. Above all, she defends her decision by saying that Dr. Luke is only “one of many” collaborators on her album, and that she made the decision based on her own experience of becoming a mother.

“I understand that it’s sparked a lot of debate. (Dr. Luke) is just one of many contributors to the record, but the reality is that it comes from me,” Perry explains. “The truth is that I’ve written these songs based on my own life experience, this metamorphosis that I’ve gone through. (Dr. Luke) has been one of the many people who have facilitated all of this. He’s been one of the writers, one of the producers. When I talk about ‘women’s world,’ I’m talking about feeling empowered now, as a mother, as a woman. I’m talking about giving birth, creating a new life and how that makes me feel grounded. I’ve created all of this with different collaborators, people that I’ve worked with in the past, from the ‘Teenage Dream’ era, all of that.”

Perry’s decision to collaborate with Dr. Luke has been met with criticism on social media and music forums, and the truth is that – to a certain extent – it may have negatively affected the commercial performance of the two singles released from ‘143’, ‘Woman’s World’ and ‘Lifetimes’, which have gone unnoticed on the charts… although certainly not on social media.

In the rest of the interview, Perry talks about various topics: her childhood, her religious upbringing and her relationship with Orlando Bloom.
