In the mountain of new musical releases that come out every week, Kate Pierson’s new work, ‘Radios & Rainbows’, runs the risk of being buried. Published just six days ago, the new album by the former B-52’s singer is an example of her versatility in exploring different musical styles, from pop ballads to raggae, and of course dance music.
The most obvious disco homage on the album is a track openly called ‘Take Me Back to the Party’. It is one of the best songs associated with a member of the B-52’s that have been heard in a long time.
‘Take Me Back to the Party’, today’s Song of the Day, does not hide its intention to recover the sound of disco music from the late 70s and early 80s. In its proposal two worlds come together, on the one hand , that of the Blondie from ‘Rapture’ and, on the other, that of their subsequent revival during the 2000s. Here we must mention the term “indie sleaze” and, above all, remember that there was a group called The Ting Tings that could have signed a song like this… and sneaked it into an Apple ad.
‘Take Me Back to the Party’ has everything to enter the current 2000s indie revival: a guitar riff that is pure Strokes / New Young Pony Club, a glamorous and decadent disco rhythm that is pure Studio 54, a hook from « ooh oohs» of the most silly, and the charismatic presence of this vocalist who is still in top form despite having been doing this for almost half a century.
It also presents ‘Take Me Back to the Party’, a story of alcoholic love understandable by anyone: “drunk and alone, I don’t want to go home without you, I can’t face it alone, so take me back to the party”, sings Kate Pierson. Pure timeless hedonism.
