Sen Senra’s new album has something more in common with Ariana Grande’s latest than her love for American R&B. In both of them their grandmothers appear speaking, and in both there is a reference – veiled or not – to the film ‘Forget about me’. Ariana’s album is named after the English title of the movie, ‘eternal sunshine’, and there’s a song on ‘PO2054AZ Vol. II’, our Record of the Week, that tells us something similar.
This is ‘Entrelazados’, the “focus track” for this Friday’s playlists. In allusion, conscious or unconscious, to the outcome of the 2000s film, this theme is situated in the middle of a relationship crisis, for which the solution is to “not know each other.” “I would like to go back to the moment before I was going to meet you / I would like to disown each other again, to live it like that again,” he proposes, of course, with a still optimistic tone. The idea is to “unknow ourselves” for the better.
‘Entrelazados’ is one of Sen Senra’s productions with DallasK from this album, and one of the most synth-pop. The melodies of the Italian song seem like a reference as in the entire generation of artists influenced by the ‘Drive’ soundtrack.
Thus, it is inevitable to think of classics from the late 70s or early 80s, such as ‘It will be because I love you’ by Ricchi e Poveri. We are also talking about songs as bittersweet as ‘Save Your Tears’, Grande’s million-dollar duet with Abel Tesfaye.
There are keyboard arpeggios and melody, while the outro with a distorted voice flies towards a new life in English, in tune with the “Emigrant” theme of this Volume of Sen Senra, revealing that the ending is not happy, with distance in between : “I’m packing my bags / and maybe you’re flying to a new city / I hope they’re ready for what’s coming / It’s time for them to be blessed with your beauty.” The last line shows Sen alone at the wheel, wondering what could have been.
