Iñaki Fernándezalso known as Iñaki glutamatehe died this Saturday victim of a cancer that had suffered for several years. He was leader and vocalist of Glutamate Ye yé.
Iñaki Fernández was a member of various musical formations, but he was known fundamentally for being a vocalist of Glutamate Ye yéone of the most provocative groups of what has gone down in history as the Madrid movement. This last Saturday he died in a Madrid hospital because of a cancer he was a victim for a few years. At the time of his death he was sixty -three years old.
Anyway, the musician was born in Bilbao and his parents were also from the north of the Peninsula, although after living in several parts of the country he decided to stay in Madrid, a city in which he started a musical career with glutamate and yé that he attributed to his need to enter the concerts for free and to face the bands that defined as “the slugs.” His ironic and irreverent lyrics, as well as his mustache halfway between Charles Chaplin and Adolf Hitler – very similar to the one Ron Mael wore during much of his career in Sparks.
For the story, classics are like “There is a man in my fridge”, “All blacks are hungry and cold”, “I am from Atleti” or “Crazy Heart”, which appeared on albums such as “Zoraida” (82), “All blacks are hungry and cold” (84), “Beautiful” (85) and “Live up” (86). The band was active between 1979 and 1986, to return to activity in 2008 with Iñaki himself in front, sharing prominence with the other group leader, Manuel “Patacho” Recio.
