Lil Nas X has begun the promotional campaign of his next album, ‘Dreamboy’, publishing five singles, at the rate of one per day. The first has been the titular cut and then, ‘Big Dummy!’, ‘Swish’, ‘Right there!’ and ‘hotbox’.
‘Hotbox’ is the powerful bet right now for the promotion of the disk. This is the best single in Montero in a long time, and not that theme produced by Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter, ‘Light Again’, which was not bad, but it was not the comteback that is ‘Hotbox’.
‘Hotbox’ captures a freshness that was missed in the work of Lil Nas X. Perhaps it is because production, elaborated to three hands between Take to Daytrip, Omer Fedi and Ojivolta, does not break his head imitating (very good) the sound of Pharrell Williams. There are those who say that ‘Hotbox’ in fact samplea ‘frontin’ of the neptunes with Jay-Z, but none of the neptunes is accredited in the recording of Montero.
‘Hotbox’ goes like a finger to Lil Nas X from two points of view. First, the lyrics are the typical seduction and bragadoccio releasing in the club. Second, the production is cheerful and light, moving from hip-hop to the bounce with grace.
The launch of ‘Hotbox’ is accompanied by a very resulton video clip, set in a world of rose, very ‘Barbie’. Lil Nas X is the Ken of this universe that borrowed the pink pool of the ‘Super Bass’ video clip by Nicki Minaj, and that passes through the pink chewing filter other possible references such as the George Michael Transformer armor in ‘Freeek!’ Or the ‘hey now!’ of outkast.
