Halsey is a “muse” and a “martyr” in her most grunge and poetic single

Halsey is building more and more hype for her fifth album with interesting singles. After ‘The End’ and ‘Lucky’, ‘Lonely is the Muse’ is another great addition to the collection. This time, through grunge and poetry, Halsey becomes a martyred muse in the name of art and gives one of her most intense performances.

“I’ve spent years making myself cool / And in a single second, you can make a decade of effort disappear,” Halsey sings in the first lines of the song. ‘Lonely is the Muse’ begins as a ballad somewhere between emo and grunge that gradually increases in intensity until she lets her throat out in the last moments of the song: “And when you’re done, you can throw me away / Like the other guys always do,” she sings in the last chorus.

The day after the song was released, Halsey posted on her Tumblr account that ‘Lonely is the Muse’ was written as a poem that she later decided to turn into a song. In fact, the poem has exclusive verses. The focus of the song is on the chorus, in which Halsey claims that she always knew she was “a martyr” and that “Jesus was one too.” However, she was built with “special pieces” for “anyone who decides that I am useful.”

In the visuals, including the single’s cover art, Halsey gives new meaning to the concepts of muse and martyr by standing atop the grave of Victor Noir, a young journalist killed by Napoleon’s nephew and repurposed as a symbol of fertility. Located in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris, the statue of Noir is famous for the legend that any woman wishing to become pregnant must touch Noir’s penis to fulfill her wish. Let’s just say Halsey is doing more than just touching his crotch.
