Grimes Doesn’t Use AI in ‘Artificial Angels’ But It Looks Like It

Grimes says that he is producing the best music of his career, during this period between albums. It’s hard to believe listening to ‘Artificial Angels’, their new single. To begin with, the title is a nod to his masterpiece, ‘Art Angels’ (2015), but the creativity and freshness of that album is not exactly what we find in ‘Artificial Angels’.

‘Artificial Angels’ is an ode to artificial intelligence written in the first person, effectively that of some type of intelligence superior to humans that threatens to impose its power. That entity promises that “I cannot die, nor do I want to, and all I long for is my own annihilation,” and like a ChatGPT in heat, it begs: “Deny me your pleasure, feed me your pain, the world can only end one way.”

The attempt to induce a kind of terror towards the future is evident in the presence of a strange computerized voice in the recording, which declares: “This is what it feels like to be chased by something that is smarter than you.”

Ironically (or not), ‘Artificial Angels’ seems like a song created by artificial intelligence in an attempt to recreate the industrial synth metal style of Poppy and Nine Inch Nails. Interestingly, Grimes has stated that, in producer Vadakin, she has found her Atticus Ross, which means she would be Trent Reznor. As I would say I’m a loser: well.

‘Artificial Angels’ is not nonsense. Simply, these types of songs, Claire knows how to do them much better.
