In their best moments, the Los Angeles band The Sophs recalls groups as dedicated to pop melody as Rialto, Supergrass or Astrid in their time. We are talking, really, about the first Beatles. It can be seen in their heartbreaking little hit ‘SWEAT’, or especially in ‘GOLDSTAR’, the title track of their album and which we choose as Song of the Day today.
But what ends up making its debut so interesting are the prisms. The songs are sung from the point of view of someone hateful, the worst of ourselves, and that is something that is especially evident in this song as they explain.
Says singer Ethan Ramon: “‘GOLDSTAR’ is the worst person you know yelling at God to give him a sign that he’s good. In a deliberately unserious way, we want the song to ask the same question that launches the album, which is: If you’re a good person for the wrong reasons, does that detract from your goodness?”
The simple lyrics that claim his “gold star” state things like: “tell me how much you love my cordiality, liberality and humanity” or leave incomplete, revealing sentences like “so far I have done no wrong except…” parodic humming. In his video clip, we see that hateful being embodied in the singer receiving what he deserves.
A song with a certain border aroma, perhaps Western, that can delight, more than fans of Calexico, those of Last Shadow Puppets due to its absolute immediacy. The Sophs are confirmed at Primavera Sound Barcelona on June 6.
