Fiona Apple has published these first original single in five years. ‘Pretrial (Let Her Home)’ is a protest song that denounces the injustices of the American prison system. In particular, the artist, inspired by her experience as a judicial observer, focuses her criticism on the devastating impact of preventive detention on women, especially black women who, unable to pay bail, are forced to remain imprisoned, far from their families. According to The Bail Project data, 80% of women imprisoned in the United States are mothers.
On a basis of energetic percussions and vocal loops, Apple exposes the drama that many women imprisoned in the United States live, many of whom cannot cope with a bond to be in poverty. Verses like “made extra shifts, but still could not pay the bond / it was not dangerous, there was no risk of escape, but the same would remain in jail / they had not been convicted of anything” they bring the world closer to this harsh reality.
Fiona Apple explained the feeling behind ‘Pretrial (Let Her Go Home)’ in an official statement. «Again and again I saw how they took people and put them in jail, for a single reason: they could not pay to recover their freedom. It was especially hard to hear how they took mothers and caregivers, separating them from the people who depend on them ».
Although ‘Pretrial (Let Hi Go Home)’ is Apple’s first original single, the artist has not been quietly quiet in recent years: this year she has launched a version of ‘Heart of Gold’ by Neil Young and has collaborated with the Waterboys. His latest study work, the excellent ‘Fetch The Bolt Cutters’, was published in 2020.
