In 2017, the arrival of an Asian edition of Eurovision was announced, but it was canceled the following year. Almost a month after the premiere of its most controversial edition, Eurovision Asia has been announced by the EBU for the end of the year with 10 countries confirmed: it will be held in Bangkok on November 14.
Thailand, South Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Laos, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan are the countries confirmed at the moment. Initially, the intention was to bring together around twenty countries to participate in the musical contest. In a statement from the EBU, it is explained that each country will select its representative during the coming months.
The initial idea of Eurovision Asia collapsed in 2018 due to a “lack of understanding” between the different broadcasters, despite the fact that a website was even created for the contest. The EBU’s goal this time is to build “something that reflects the voices, identities and ambitions of the region, while remaining faithful to what has always made the contest special.”
For the moment, Eurovision will face its most complicated edition next May, from which the Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland and Spain have withdrawn their participation due to the presence of Israel’s KAN. This also coincides with the format’s 70th anniversary.
